Comparing the themes, topics and enthusiasm at this, the eleventh CS-International conference, with previous years’ events, it very much feels that many of the products processes and markets enabled by compound semiconductors, have truly come of age and are now well established as mature technologies, with so many new and emerging technologies.

The 2022 conference covered themes as diverse as energy efficient, high speed networks, GaN and SiC power electronics, VCSELs and MicrolLEDs, each of which demonstrated levels of passion and vibrancy of an industry sector that will drive forward a wide range of technology applications over the coming decades.

A great conference has to excel on many fronts. It has to feature a wide range of engaging presentations from leading companies, helping delegates to identify the most important markets for tomorrow; it has to attract a good number of attendees that network, sharing their insight; and has to include many exhibitors, offering opportunities to improve productivity.

Judged in these terms, the 2021 Compound Semiconductor International Conference was a tremendous success. No-one there could have failed to identify what is now the most promising market for this sector - the electric vehicle industry - while attendance and exhibition numbers hit all-time highs, with 700 delegates coming to Brussels for this meeting, plus the co-located Photonics Integrated Circuits International and Sensors Solutions International. Sponsorship across the three conferences, held over 26-27 March, totalled 70.

Great talks, record attendance and an expanded exhibition hall propel CS International to a new level.

CS International 2017 excelled on many fronts, combining insightful presentations on key issues with great attendance figures and a packed exhibition hall. For the first time in its seven-year history, CS International co-located with PIC International and the inaugural IoT International. This move gave those attending, which numbered well over 500, the opportunity to pick and choose from nearly a hundred talks spread over three events.

During breaks in the talks at this two-day meeting, held on 7-8 March at the Sheraton Hotel at Brussels airport, delegates approached the makers of tools, materials and other services in an exhibition hall featuring more than 50 sponsors.

Brussels proved a great new venue, as more than 420 flocked to the co-located CS International and PIC International Conference. A switch of venue proved a great success for the CS International Conference, with over 420 delegates and nearly 50 sponsors descended on Brussels on the 1st and 2nd March 2016.

Held in the Sheraton Airport Hotel, CS International took on a new dimension, thanks to its twinning with the inaugural and highly successful PIC International. Then in its sixth year, CS International continued to go from strength to strength, with a diverse line-up of speakers delivering key insights into the various sectors within the compound semiconductor industry.

Analysts Help CS International To Hit A New High

Then in its fifth year, CS International hit a new high with its strongest ever line-up of speakers. More than 300 delegates gained insight into the potential of the compound semiconductor industry in areas such as lighting, GaAs microelectronics, and mainstream microprocessors thanks in part to presentations from leading market analysts.

In the lighting market, sales of LEDs were on the rise, partly due to the phasing out of incandescent sources in many countries. By 2018 it was expected that more than half of all revenue from bulbs will come from the sales of lamps incorporating solid-state sources, according to William Rhodes from IHS Technology.

35 presentations equipped delegates with a comprehensive overview of the compound semiconductor industry. Around 300 delegates and over 30 sponsors descended on Frankfurt for the fourth CS International Conference, which was held at the Sheraton Airport Hotel 18th-19th March 2014.

Presentations highlighted the growing penetration of compound semiconductors into the silicon industry, and the use of silicon in the making of III-V chips.
